He ignores the right choices that he knows he needs to make, out of fear of being subject to the same ridicule. He may have been a product of his environment, seeing that his friends constantly jeer their conventionally unappealing peers. Sadly, Landon dwells on this mentality in the beginning. These traditions include the prejudice mentality that claims only the skinny and pretty are socially acceptable. Since the story is set in the 1950s, the reader is given some background information on the traditions of the time period.
I never understood why he always preached about fornicators. Outside of that specific arc, he is a flat character. I sympathized with Hegbert in the latter half of the story for spoiler-related reasons I will not discuss in this review. It was one of those stories that made its rounds whenever Hegbert had to baptize a baby….īaptist churches don’t baptize babies. It mainly refers to the traditions of the Baptist sector of the Christian faith: The following quote has little to do with Hegbert himself. That’s a part of the basic definition: not giving a wrongdoer the punishment he deserves. “God is merciful to children, but the children must be worthy as well”
When he does talk about mercy in his sermons, he misuses the term: He focuses on God’s wrath upon fornicators more than God’s mercy. Hegbert is a lot more of a fanatic than I remembered.
Most of my issues with A Walk to Remember are related to Reverend Hegbert Sullivan’s biblical philosophy, the social prejudices of the story’s time period, and Landon’s character at the beginning of the book. Should I have just lived in the blissful ignorance of my thirteen-year-old mind (since that’s when I first read this book) or is it just time I notice and accept this book’s flaws? I’m starting to question whether I should have reread this or not. Certainly the last person he thought he’d fall for was Jamie, the shy, almost ethereal daughter of the town’s Baptist minister…Jamie, who was destined to show him the depths of the human heart – and the joy and pain of living.
